🔹️PROCESS
It was made with a tool called tjanting, instead of stamped or printing. Every dots and lines were hand drawn individually and then dyed, boiled, rewaxed, and the process was repeated , depending on the complexities of the design. A piece like this can take four to six months or more to produce.
🔹️ABOUT
The village of Banyumas ceased its batik production in the 70s, making this a very much sought after piece. Although, productions has started again in recent years, this classic design typical of the village remain popular, with its beautiful sogan and indigo colour on cream background.
Notice on the one half how the pair of birds are centralised and the right way up. However, on the other half there are two pairs of birds and all the motifs on this side of the fabric are upside down. The reasoning, this acts as an instructions on which side to wrap first.
Whichever pair of birds the wearer chose to show, she
would make sure that the birds which would be visible were not the ones depicted upside down. Therefore the upside down section of the fabric act as an instruction as to which side to be wrapped first.
This is a sign of a not just a skilfull artist but a thoughtful one too, taking into account how every piece will be worn.
