As he learned to speak, he would call himself “Maiah”. The balaclava has become a winter essential which serves as hat and scarf, all in one. We love it because it keeps ears, face and neck warm and it is easily slipped on and off thanks to the elastic bind-off technique used in this pattern. It is worked from the top down in garter stitch. The crown and body of the hat are worked back and forth on circular needles, the work is then joined in order to work the collar in the round. Stitches are picked up in order to work the 1x1 rib edge along the face opening.

YOUTUBE Video Tutorials:
My Dear Poppet - Knitting Tutorials on YouTube
You can find video tutorials for all techniques in this guide on YouTube, follow the links here or directly in the PDF

2 Mrzus.str.
Italian cast-off (sewn cast-off)
Knit stitches from the side edge (in garter stitch)
SSK acceptance
Shortened rows with wrap stitches
Zun-re
Zun-li

SIZES
0-3 months (3-6 months) 6-9 months (9-12 months) 1-2 years (2-3 years) 3-4 years (5-10 years)

HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE
35 cm (41 cm) 43 cm (45 cm) 47 cm (48 cm) 49 cm (51 cm) / 13.75'' (16.25'') 17'' (17.75'') 18.5'' (19'') 19.25'' (20,5'')

GAUGE
17 sts x 34 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches in garter stitch after washing

SUGGESTED NEEDLES
4,5 mm (US size 7) / 40 cm (16 inch) circular needles, one pair of 4,5 mm (US size 7) double pointed needles (or the required size to obtain gauge)

YARN
37 (43) 51 (57) 60 (68) 81 (91) grams of Aran weight yarn. Suggested yarns:
Bingo from Lana Grossa (100 % Merino wool, 50 g = approx. 80 m / 87 yards);
Big Merino Hug from Rosy Green Wool (100 % Merino wool, 100 g = approx. 160 m / 175 yards).

Or 28 (33) 39 (43) 46 (51) 61 (68) grams of Double Sunday from Sandnes held together with 7 (9) 10 (11) 12 (13) 16 (17) grams of Tynn Silk Mohair from Sandnes (57% Mohair, 28% Silk and 15% Wool, 25 g = approx. 212 m / 232 yards).

SUPPLIES
2 stitch markers (out of which one needs to be removable or a safety pin), tapestry needle

DIFFICULTY LEVEL
➰ ➰ (2 of 5)

The instructions will be made available as a PDF download by email after purchase.

This pattern is for personal use only.
