COSY SCARF

COSY SCARF

We see them everywhere and rightly so. Knitted scarfs are a truly classic accessory to complete your every outfit and to add that little bit of warmth to your wardrobe.

Knitted in all stockinette stitch, the Cosy Scarf is a very beginner friendly project. All you need is a pair of 4 mm needles and only one ball of Lana Grossa's Cosy Socks.

I will guide you through how to make the scarf step by step. Grab a cuppa and enjoy making it. I hope you love it.

SIZE

one size (Tip: you can simply knit the scarf as long as your desired length, you can also add a second ball of yarn to make it even bigger)

MEASUREMENTS OF FINISHED SCARF

Width: approx. 115 cm / 45.25’’ (measured across its width, from tip to tip)
Height: approx. 77 cm / 30.25’’ (measured along the centre increase line)

GAUGE

18 - 20 Stitches / 10 cm / 4 inches on needle size 4 mm (US size 6)

NEEDLES

One circular needle size 4 mm (US size 6) / 80 cm / 31.5’’ or longer

MATERIAL

1 Ball of Lanagrossa Cosy Socks (70 % Merino Wool extra fine, 30 % Polyamide, 100 g approx. 400 m / 437 yards)

Tip: the cosy socks is a fingering weight yarn that has added volume which is created by extra long fibres that are woven in to the yarn. This makes it super long, yet gives us a gauge of 20 sts. You can swap the Cosy Socks for two strands of silk mohair yarn held together or one strand of usual fingering weight yarn held together with one strand of mohair. You will need approx. 400 meters / 437 yards of each yarn quality.

SUPPLIES

2 stitch markers

PATTERN

The Cosy Scarf is knitted back and forth in stockinette stitch, beginning at the centre of the wide side of the scarf. Raglan increases form the triangle shape of the scarf and an i-cord edge is worked in as you knit.

WORKING THE SCARF

With a circular needle size 4 mm / 80 cm (31.5 ‘’) or longer, cast on 7 sts. Turn your work and knit the scarf back and forth as follows (the work will be turned after each row):

Row 1 (WS Row): p until last 3 sts, lift last 3 sts as if to purl with the yarn in front of your work.

Row 2 (RS Row): k 3, kfb, lift 3 sts twisted with the yarn behind the work. Insert the needle through the back leg of the stitch from back to front and lift the stitch off the needle without knitting it. While you do so, the stitch twists around (see my video tutorial for help, you can find it here)

Row 3 (WS): p until last 3 sts, lift last 3 sts as if to purl with the yarn in front of your work.

Row 4 (RS): k 3, M1L, place sm, k 2, place sm, M1R, lift 3 sts twisted with yarn in back. You have worked 2 increases, one at each side edge.

Row 5 (WS): p until last 3 sts, lift last 3 sts as if to purl with the yarn in front of your work. Lift the stitch markers during this row, without working any increases.

You can find a video tutorial for how to work the beginning of the scarf here.

Row 6 (RS): k 3, M1L, k until sm, M1R, sm, k 2, sm, M1L, k until last 3 sts, M1R, lift 3 sts twisted with yarn in back. You have now worked 4 increases, two at the side edges and 2 at the centre.

Row 7 (WS): p until last 3 sts, lift last 3 sts as if to purl with the yarn in front of your work. Lift the stitch markers during this row, without working any increases.

Repeat rows 6 and 7 until you have reached your desired length or until your ball of wool is almost finished. End after a WS row. Note: you will need approx. 5 g of your yarn to work the i-cord bind off.

Tip: If you would like an extra large scarf, you can simply add another ball of wool and carry on knitting until your desired length.

During your next RS row, bind off using the i-cord bind off method as follows:

BIND OFF AND I-CORD EDGE

Working from the RS, * k 2, k2tog tbl. Slip all 3 sts back onto the left needle *. Repeat from * to * until you have 3 sts left on your needle. All 3 sts are placed on the left needle. K 2, pull the first st over the second st in order to bind it off, k 1 and again, lift the first stitch over the second st in order to bind it off. Break yarn and pull the yarn tail through the last st in order to secure it. See my video tutorial for help, you can find it here.

You have finished knitting your cosy scarf. 🎀

Weave in all ends securely, wash and gently block your scarf. The i-cord edges like to pull in a little bit, it may therefore be helpful to pin the scarf down all along its edges in order to let it dry flat.

I hope you enjoyed making the Cosy Scarf and I would love to see your version on instagram, use #cosyscarf and @mydearpoppet to tag along. 💌
